I am so glad that I looked at this article. My soon to be daughter in law is coming from China in less than a week and my son advised me that overly sweet desserts are not the standard in her world. I will be making cut out cookies decorated with royal icing as one of the desserts she has requested. Now I know I will be able to reduce the sugar in the cookie itself, thereby reducing the sometimes cloyingly sweetness of royal icing decorations. (I will also surprise her with traditional "Mooncakes" for the Chinese New Year in February!)
